Prayers for Our Nation

Jan. 19, 2009

Hello Partners and Friends,

It has been 220 years since the first inauguration of a president under our national Constitution. During that period 43 distinguished individuals have served in that position. On Tues., Jan. 20, 2009, our nation inaugurates the 44th president of the United States. Whether individuals agree or disagree with the political party or persons assuming leadership in the United States, each American should feel a sense of joy at yet another peaceful transition of power and the excitement that comes during this process.

At Believers Stand United we pray for President Obama, Vice President Biden, Secretary of State Clinton and all the members of the new Cabinet, as well as their families. We also pray for President and Mrs. Bush and their family, as they move back to Texas and begin a new life of service. We don’t do this just because we want to. We pray for these people because God’s Word requires us to do so. First Timothy 2:1-4 reminds us to “pray for all that are in authority” and the result is that we “may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.” This is a great scripture to claim for our newly elected officials.

I am aware this is a time fraught with many emotions, talk of change and new direction that has excited many yet worried others. The important thing for you and me, as people of faith, to remember is the U.S. government is not our source. Elected officials come and go; they serve their time and then move on to other interests and forms of service. In addition, they change their opinions and policies on a regular basis. However, God’s Word remains forever. The Bible reminds us the God of Abraham neither slumbers nor sleeps and He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

When we exchange what Brother Copeland calls “the Babylonian system for the Eden Blessing,” life takes on new meaning and power. Because it is then we realize that we don’t have to be in control. God has that responsibility. Our role is to be focused and responsive to Him. How do we do that? We obey today, tomorrow and the next day…for when we do this each day we will find ourselves exactly where God intends us to be at any given time.

Remember, America is the land of the free and home of the brave. We are a nation founded on the principles of the Bible by men and women who confessed Jesus Christ as Lord. We must continue to keep focused on God’s plan and watch how He unfolds the future.

Be sure to read 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Jeremiah 29:11 as you look to your specific role in God’s plan. Yes, God does have a master plan for your life, as we see in Ephesians 2:10. And according to John 16:13-15 we can know that plan.

God bless you and those you love and may God continue to bless the United States of America. And remember…

JESUS IS LORD!
