Prayer Under Attack In America
August 13, 2009
Dear Friends,
The issue of prayer is again under attack in America. This time, the focus is on the city council of Lodi, Calif., a city in Northern California with 63,000 residents situated 90 miles east of San Francisco and 35 miles south of Sacramento.
The current debate is whether or not the Lodi City Council should have prayer before the council meetings and if the Name of Jesus can be used. I understand that for several years the city council has begun its meetings, as most governmental bodies do, with prayer. I have personally been invited to open state legislatures with prayer in Texas, New Mexico, New York and Virginia. In addition, I’ve opened both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in prayer. If prayers for agencies of government are so common in the United States, why should a local city council have a problem with it?
Earlier this year someone took issue with prayer in Lodi and the city council was contacted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, stating the prayers should stop. A local resident of the city who is an avowed atheist has stated publicly that he will organize a protest against prayer in his city.
The city council has delayed action on this issue until September 2009. I invite you to join your BSU team in letting the mayor and mayor pro-tem of Lodi, Calif., know how you feel not only about the right for all people to pray but also the right to pray in Jesus’ Name.
The U.S. Constitution grants everyone the right to pray. This is one of the many rights we are now having to fight to retain…whether on military bases, at school board meetings or in city council meetings. Wherever the flag of the United States flies, citizens should have the right to express their religion without threat or persecution.
