Initial Victory for Prayer in America

September 22, 2009

Hello, Dear friends and BSU Partners,

I am happy to say we saw a win for prayer in America late last week! Both Frank Lay and Robert Freeman, the principal and athletic director from Pace, Fla., were found NOT GUILTY on the criminal charges I recently wrote you about regarding prayer at a high school booster dinner. Both men faced a $5,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

Congratulations to Mr. Lay and Mr. Freeman, and to all of you who emailed, blogged and made your voices heard for religious freedom in America. Frank Lay stated last Thursday as he left the federal courthouse, "I want to thank my chief counsel, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit."

BUT there is still work to do as the U.S. District Judge Casey Rogers made it clear that the order still stands there should be "no prayer or religion in school." This federal court order states prayer in schools, reading a sacred text, calling upon a deity to offer guidance, assistance or blessing is prohibited, as well as at any religious or baccalaureate services. In addition, all school employees are prohibited to participate in prayer…even to the extent of not being permitted "a posture or manner that is likely to be perceived as an endorsement of prayer, such as bowing their heads, folding their hands, etc."

I know you agree that this kind of restriction is simply ridiculous and a clear violation of the U.S. Constitution. Remember judges’ decisions can be reversed and court orders changed so it is important for all of us, wherever we may live in the nation, to continue to stand up and speak out for freedom for all people of faith.

We celebrate the victory of this one prayer skirmish, but stay vigilant in this battle for freedom in America.

JESUS IS LORD!
